Question:

Regarding combining salaah can you combine it if it had rained before magrib namaz but when namaz had started it had stopped but the floor out side was wet secondly how long most the rain rain for before we can combine them jazakallah kare

Answer:

It is permissible for a resident non-traveler to join between prayers on account of certain weather conditions, like rain, snow, hail, etc. Snow and hail are considered when they liquefy enough to make one’s garment wet. One may only join in the first prayers time. Accordingly, zuhr and asr (or the Friday prayer and asr) may be joined in zuhr’s time and maghrib and isha in maghrib’s time. This is Imam Shafi’s opinion in the qawl jadid. According to the qawl qadim, one may join in either the first or the second time. This opinion has also been transmitted in his Imla. (Mughni al-Muhtaj 1/534)

The weather condition must be present at the beginning of the first prayer. And, according to the relied-upon opinion [al-asahh], it must be present at the conclusion of the first prayer. There is also an opinion [muqabil al-asahh] that the presence of rain is not stipulated at the time of concluding the first prayer. There is no problem if the rain cedes during the prayer’s performance. (Ibid)

If it was raining at the time of the beginning of the maghrib prayer and at the time of its end [salam], then it was done correctly according to the relied-upon view [al-asahh]. If it was raining at the beginning only, then according to another opinion in the Shafi School [muqabil al-asahh] it was done correctly.

Allah knows best.

  1. I need clarity on this.

when you say that rain is present at begining of the first pray & conclution of first pray- is this the waqt or the actual 3 rakaats of maghrib.

& if one were to join dew to rain but the rain stops before the waqt of isha sets in but it rained long enough for one to complete the maghrib & joined 4 rakaats of isha. will one have to repeat the isha.

  2. Salams

Can you shorten the prayer too? 2 rakats of Isha instead of 4 and should the prayer done in Jamah? Is it valid if done individually?

  3. moderation.

  4. Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuHu,

Joining prayers due to rain is only done in the first prayer’s time [jam’ taqdim]. Accordingly, maghrib and isha would be joined only in maghrib’s time. Similarly, zuhr (or the Friday prayer) and asr only in zuhr’s time. Joining prayers in the second time [jam’ ta’khir] was considered in the qawl qadim. However in the jadid, al-Shafi’i did not consider it permissible in the case of rain. (Mughni al-Muhtaj 1/533-34) Yet, Khatib mentions that, in al-Imla, Imam Shafi’i considered jam’ ta’khir permissible, drawing an analogy [qiyas] on joining prayers due to travel. (Ibid, 1/534)

It must be raining during the first prayer’s takbir and at its taslim according to the relied-upon opinion [al-asahh]; and according to the muqabil, only at the takbir. (Ibid) Therefore, if the rain stops during the first prayer’s performance, jam’ may still be made as long as it is raining when one starts the first prayer and when one concludes the first prayer.

Noteworthy, joining prayers due to rain is a dispensation for one who is going to pray in congregation at a mosque that is far from one’s home, who would be adversely affected by the rain (or snow, etc).

Prayers may not be shortened due to rain.

    And, Allah knows best.

  5. so if the rain stops long before the time of isha sets in the salah would be valid & you do not need to go back to the masjid or make it at home on your own.

if the congrigation does not do jam’, could you stand up & do it on your own while the imaam is busy with the dhikr & dua.

is this dispensation also for those driving since its not safe to drive in heavy rain & in our case in south africa with high accident numbers.
