The great Imam of Islam and Hafidh of Hadith Abu Ja’far Muhammad b. Isa b. Sawrah b. Musa b. al-Dahhak al-Tirmidhi is the author of very significant contributions, which along with the contributions of his peers, greatly preserved the Prophet’s Sunnah for Muslims from their times up to today. Notably, Imam Tirmidhi authored his al-Jami’ and al-‘Ilal. He was born around the year 210 and traveled extensively in the pursuit of religious knowledge. He heard hadith from the greatest of ulama that his era witnessed, being a student of Imam Muhammad b. Ismail al-Bukhari. Hakim related that it was said regarding Tirmidhi that, “After Bukhari’s passing he did not leave behind in Khurasan the like of Tirmidhi in ilm [knowledge], hifz [preservation of hadith], wara’ [scrupulousness], and zuhd [abstinence].” Imam Tirmidhi passed away to the mercy and grace of his Lord in the year 279.
Some scholars have contrasted Tirmidhi’s Jami’ as being more beneficial than Imams Bukhari or Muslim’s books in that one well-acquainted with hadith will most likely derive benefit from Imams Bukhari and Muslim’s, while most anyone will benefit from Tirmidhi’s. Hafidh Dhahabi related on observation of this purport in his Siyar v. 13, p. 270. An additional feature of Tirmidhi’s work is that he includes the opinions of the fuqaha (muslim jurists), thus setting the stage for discussions that may surround the fiqh of the hadith.
The class offered here intends to cover Kitab al-Taharah (chapter on ritual purification) from Imam Tirmidhi’s Jami’. This consists of 148 ahadith. We anticipate that it will take 10-12 classes to complete a reading of the chapter insha’Allah. Classes will begin 8:00 pm Egyptian time (+2 GMT) on January 22 2012.
