Question:
Is the salathu jumah sunnah or fard to women? Are there any hadeeth related to this?
Answer:
In the Shafi’i School, the Friday prayer is not obligatory on women. (See: al-Muhadhdhab 1/109; Nihayat al-Muhtaj 2/285)
This is supported by what al-Daraqutni and others related,
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day must perform the Friday prayer except for women, travellers, slaves, or the sick.”
Even though it is not obligatory, her performance is still valid. This is established by a consensus. In Minhaj al-Talibin, Imam al-Nawawi stated,
ومن صحت ظهره (م ر: ممن لا جمعة عليه) صحت جمعته (م ر: بالإجماع كالصبي والعبد والمراة) كما في نهاية المحتاج
“One whose zuhr prayer is valid, their jumu’ah prayer is also valid [al-Ramli: by consensus, like the adolescent, slave, and women.]” (Nihayat al-Muhtaj, 1/287)

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate
The preferred opinion of the later fuqaha of the Shafi’i madhhab, is that it is valid to give a khutbah in another language beside Arabic, with the conditions that people understood the language and all the integrals of the khutbah should be delivered in Arabic.
The Integrals of the Two Khuṭbahs are Five:
1. Praising Allah in both the khuṭbahs.
2. Ṣalāh upon Nabi sallaLlahu alayhi wa alihi sallam in both the khuṭbahs.
3. Enjoining taqwa in both the khuṭbahs.
4. Recitation of one verse of the Qurʾān in one of the khuṭbahs.
5. To make duʿā for the believers, males and females in the second khuṭbah.

Imam Abi Shuja’ Al-Isfahani in his “Matn”, also known as Taqrib or Ghayat Al-Ikhtisar, states,
“And it is recommended (mustahabb) to listen (attentively) during the course of the khutbah [of Jumu'ah].”
In the commentary of this statement, Imam Taqiy-ud-Din Al-Hisni (rahmatullah alayh) asks the question in his Kifayatul-Akhyar, “And is it forbidden to speak during the khutbah? Regarding it are two opinions [of the madh-hab].”
The following is the gloss of Imam Taqiy-ud-Din Al-Hisni upon the above words of Imam Abi Shuja’. May Allah benefit us with them!
